Efforts To Stop Illegal Take Over of CSIR Lands Proves Futile

By Catherine Ahiador:

The staff of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR has criticized government’s lack of commitment to stopping encroachments into its plans for research. The council’s lands in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions have been encroached upon by developers and the problem continues unabated despite efforts by the council to seek redress at the courts.

President of the staff association, Dr. Edward Yeboah said that their research works are always impacted negatively due to these activities. ‘A time will come when we cannot do any meaningful research which is also going to affect us,’ he lamented, adding that the workers agitated every one and then seeing that their work is being impacted negatively.

He was worried that ‘there have been meetings upon meetings to address the issue but the development is still continuing.’ He added that when the meeting and the land is no longer there for your research, your research efforts are being destroyed while cautioning authorities to act and act swiftly.

Mr. Yeboah was also worried that the effort to stop the illegal take-over of their lands has received no support. He is therefore warning that the encroachment possess a serious threat to Ghana’s food security.
