‘Educational system cause of high unemployment’

The high level of unemployment in the country can be attributed to Ghana’s educational system, the Head of Department of Computing and Information Technology of the Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, Dr Nana Kofi Annan has said.

According to him, Africa, and for that matter Ghana, was lagging behind because the educational system produced graduates whose knowledge and expertise were irrelevant to the needs of the people.

Dr Annan said this at the 13th matriculation ceremony of the university held in Accra. About 1,066 successful applicants gained admission to pursue various academic disciplines at the university this year.

The students comprised 543 males and 523 females from 14 countries.

According to Dr Annan, Africans could not compete with their counterparts in the world if they continued to teach with old- fashioned tools and materials while their counterparts used modern and sophisticated tools.

He, therefore, called for the review of the education system to reflect the current trends of training job creators rather than job seekers.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Oduro Afriyie, said the university’s mission was to provide students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills relevant to successful careers and fulfillment in an increasingly globalised and competitive world.

To achieve the goal, he said, Wisconsin was offering a curriculum that met higher educational goals and provided the requisite knowledge and skills to prepare its students in their chosen professions.

He, therefore, urged the matriculants to take their studies seriously in order to complete their courses successfully.

The Registrar of the University, Mr Frank A. Yeboah, took the students through the matriculation oath, which ushered the students formally into the university.
