‘Don’t Rush Cattle Ranching Law’

Nii Anum Samuel Okley, a livestock farmer in the Shai Osudoku district in the Grater Accra Region has tasked government not to rush the passage of the Cattle Ranching Law until they have put all measures in place to support that move.

Mr. Okley who was speaking on the Rite news while admitting that some herdsmen destroyed farms of innocent farmers, urged government to make adequate provisions to grant the farmers where to feed their cattle if they are to pass the law.

Nii Okley also advised that in order to avoid confrontations, farmers should be cautioned, in the event that the law is passed, to desist from encroaching on lands allocated cattle farmers for their activities.

He wondered why parliamentarians would just seek to pass laws on them without first holding any consultations with them. A raving Mr. Okley accused the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of paying very little attention to agriculture while only interested in ‘arm-chair’ business.

To Nii Okley, parliamentarians who are bent on enacting the law have no idea what it takes to operate such a system. He accused them of only copying blindly from other countries and have not properly any critical checks before considering following suit. “Those countries they are trying to copy take their time to grow the grasses for the cattle,” he added.

The Cow Ranching Law is yet to be enacted to monitor and regulate the activities of cattle movement in Ghana by parliament as a result of the activities of Fulani nomads which has resulted in several clashes with indigenes.
