Creating Sub-Committees On Agric Recipe For Agric Sector Improvement

Williams Yirenkye, an assembly member for the New Akrade electoral area in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern region has in an interview with Rite FM on the Mobilizing Action toward Agricultural Sector Improvement,   MAASI project said there was the need to improve the agricultural sector in the district. He added that in order to improve the agric sector in the district there was the need for the department to create a sub-committee on agriculture in the district, as this will help improve agriculture. He further indicated that the lack of a sub-committee for the agricultural department breeds the failure of the department to improve the agricultural production in the district.

Mr. William also continued by saying, the provision of a sub-committee in the agricultural department will help them lobby with other assembly members in the district in order to achieve their aim of improving agriculture.

Agriculture is said to be the backbone and pillar of the country, but authorities in the country have failed to pay the attention needed for the improvement of the sector.

He said, about 80% of the total population in the Asuogyman district are farmers, hence the need to improve agricultural production in the district. Also he noted that, facts gathered from the district indicated that inadequate resources are allocated to the agricultural sector in the district. Also less than 1.4% of the resources are allocated to the agricultural sector.

 

He suggested the need for farmers association coming together to form Farmer Based Organization (FBOs) as these will help in the improvement of the agric sector in the district. Also the farmers associations together with their collective effort should come out with conceptive policy on agriculture to be presented to the DCE for implementation in order to boost the agricultural sector in the district.

He further stated that the youth of this current generation lacks the knowledge and the essence of being in agriculture, adding that this comes as a result of inadequate resources allocated to the agric sector. He finally concluded that, there was the need for more resources to be allocated to the agricultural sector as this will help the sector with diverse projects and programs needed to improve agriculture in the district.
