The Eastern regional road safety manager, Mr. Kwasi Yirenkyi has bemoaned that road crashes are extremely rampant during the month of December and January due to onset of the dry season, and that drivers and pedestrians must take extra precaution when using the road to avoid any road accident.

He was responding to recent hit and run situations in the country on rite morning ride with Owuraku Asamoah. According to him, visibility becomes very poor during the dry season season, and this change calls on drivers to use their hazard lights, head lights and fog lights judiciously for benefit of the Ghanaian citizenry.

Mr. Yirenkyi said he was optimistic that road crashes would reduce in the season, if drivers heed to road traffic regulations and road safety measures. He added that screen wipers must be used to clear dust from windscreens and that drivers must always remember to drive defensively.

According to him, drivers who drive more than 50kmph could reduce it to 30kmph to avoid stress accompanied with long hours of driving. And that all should be alert to identify with the ears, sounds that come from vehicles and wait for them to pass before any attempt is made to cross the road.

In another development, the road safety manager expressed unhappiness about road users using earpiece to listen to music when on the road, adding that such acts diverts attention and makes one unaware of any sounds from vehicle engines.

However he wished all Ghanaians and drivers in the country an accident free Christmas, adding that every life was to be defended to stay alive as each had a quota to contribute to the development of the nation.
