Cotton farmers in U/W rendered jobless

Cotton farmers in the Upper West Region have been rendered jobless due to the change in climate and some companies in the region unable to satisfy the needs of the farmers.

In an interview with one Yussif Nasaara who was a cotton farmer revealed to Rite News stating that the weather in Upper West Region is not friendly to the cotton plant because this is the time they should have finished applying their compound fertilizer but as at now, they are still planting and the rains too are not falling therefore the cotton is unable to germinate well.

The few people who had rains to continue with the planting, yielded no good result and the ones which were able to germinate have all dried up due to no rain fall. He mourned

He further revealed that, companies like Ghana Cotton Company and Olam Ghana have pulled out from supporting them. They were giving farmers fertilizer and loans but farmers were unable to pay back the loans they were given at the end of the farming season DUE TOP low harvest which led the companies to pull out. This to him is seriously affecting the country’s cotton industry.
