By Foster Akafia:

Mr Debra has called on farmers to ensure that irrigation is done according what types of crops are being planted. According to him, particular crops require specific types of irrigation, stressing that there is the need for some education on the proper irrigation schemes.

Mr. Debrah, CEO of Goland Plantation made the comments in an interview with Rite FM’s Edwin Larbi when he appeared on Agrotech on Monday, on Farm Irrigation methods needed to improve on Ghana’s farming system.

‘Every crop and how its irrigation should be done and this calls for proper education on irrigation.  When farmers are well educated on irrigation, it will help them to cut down cost in terms of hiring of labour to save money which means at least two people can be employed to do that work. What is needed however is not only on education on irrigation but the love and the welling to do it,’ Mr. Debrah added.

According to him, irrigation is now more involved in food production due to the advancement in modern farming activities.

‘Because farming methods are now getting advanced, almost all the foods we plant involve some irrigation. The farmers don’t have any resources to do irrigation so that we can stop importing foodstuffs from other countries around us. The government should keep its eye on the farmers so that they can produce enough food to enable us export some,’ Mr. Debrah stressed.

He acknowledged that farmers need equipment to enable them do their work properly, noting that though there are good farmers in Ghana, the lack of education and the necessary as well as lack of adequate support from the government has denied the farmers from accessing the most important equipment for good farming and irrigation activities,’ Mr. Debrah observed.
