Concentrate More On Supporting Fisher Folk And Forget Insurance

The Government of Ghana has assured of it preparedness and commitment to provide insurance to fish farmers to help them in their operations. However, the expected beneficiaries who though agreed that it is a good initiative think that should not be government’s priority for fisher folk at this time.

In an interview with Mr. Godfred Alimo, a fish farmer at Senchi near Akosombo in the Eastern region on the Morning Ride on Rite FM, he said it’s a very good vision but the farmers are facing a lot of challenges which need to be attended to. Citing an example to buttress his point, he said the government have to subsidize the fish feed and also support fishermen with modern technology to improve their farming activities.

He said that was the most critical need of farmers now and added that small fish farmers will collapse if that was not done. Mr. Alimo stated that the government should equally concentrate on drawing the youth into the fishing industry through good policies because it has the potential of being great which is a far cry from that.

He added that if the government subsidizes the feed and other good policies are implemented, they can pay their own insurance without depending on the government. He later said the numbers of fishermen is dwindling and called for the intervention of government.
