Cocoyam Farming A More Lucrative Option

Mr. Michael Tetteh, a farmer based in Asesewa in the Upper Manya District in the Eastern Region of Ghana, yesterday in an interview with Mr. Emmanuel Asamoah on Rite FM, revealed that cocoyam farming was more lucrative than other crops such as cassava farming. He revealed this on the “Feed the Future Platform” which is sponsored by the USAID/ Ghana Feed the Future (FtF) Agriculture Policy Support Project when he appeared as a guest on the show.

Mr. Tetteh who says he has been engaged in farming for the past 10 years said his experience in farming has given him the urge to yearn more into cocoyam farming as his major farming activity. He said marketing the cassava on some occasions was frustrating as there were no ready markets for all the stuff and even on those occasions when buyers showed up, they requested to buy the stuff on credit. In this situation, farmers have to wait for long periods before their debtors pay up.

This is unlike the cocoyam which they sell at higher costs and always has ready markets. He said in this instance buyers do not ask for credit since the demand always outstretches supply which makes cocoyam farming a far more lucrative venture.
