Cocoa workers grateful to Opuni for his support

Workers of the Cocoa industry in Ghana at the celebration of this year’s May Day shamed the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) and the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU).

Not even antics employed by the ICU and GAWU at Tema in the Greater Accra region – where the regional celebration took place could deter the Cocoa industry workers from telling the whole world that they are no more with the ICU and GAWU and that they are in full support of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board, for his good works.

The ICU used allegedly hired people at Tema to prevent the cocoa workers from displaying their huge banner saluting President John Dramani Mahama, for giving them the hardworking and straightforward Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, as their CEO.

Workers, clad in red shirts, gave the intruders the run for their money, as they challenged them by telling them in the face that they have severed ties with the ICU and GAWU.

The machinations by the ICU and GAWU to smear the CEO of the COCOBOD, because of decision by the workers of the cocoa industry to form their own union fell on rocks.

In what appears to be clear violation of Freedom of Association, the ICU and GAWU were forcing the COCOBOD workers not secede, but that could not work.

After failing to secure an injunction to prevent the moves, the ICU and GAWU have resorted to lies, fabrications and malicious moves against the CEO of COCOBOD.

The workers have, however, remained resolute on the decision to form a new union and have so far declared their unflinching support for the CEO, because they think he is the right man for the job.

Interestingly, the two union leaders never raised the issues they were raising now when the cocoa workers were contributing to the growth of their unions.

Insiders say that the ICU and GAWU are peeved with the secession by the cocoa industry workers, because their financial contributions were substantial.
