Cocoa Farmers Worried Over Low Harvest

Cocoa Farmers at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region have poured out their frustrations and have severely expressed their fears that Government should expect low harvest this year. A cocoa farmer, Mr. Robert Nimo, in an interview with Rite FM complained bitterly that Government’s efforts and measures put in place to support cocoa production was ineffective.

He said that Cocoa farmers were facing huge challenges in areas such as the supply of cocoa seedlings and the distribution of input necessary to support the growth of cocoa farming. He said, they do not receive subsidized fertilizer from the government and even in the event that they do, it delays hence only few people receive while neglecting the large masses of the farmers. He said at times, out of about 50 cocoa farmers, only a paltry 5 people get the fertilizer.

Mr. Nimo also said insecticides for use are also not fairly distributed since six people are supposed to share a bottle of the insecticides which is woefully inadequate. He also noted that, the insecticides to be used by cocoa farmers in Ghana are sold to cocoa farmers in other countries such as Burkina-Faso, something he says government must investigate.
