Charges against SA ex-servicemen ‘watery’ – Atta Akyea

NPP MP for Abuakwa South has slighted charges against the three South African ex-servicemen picked up by the BNI for acts that compromise the country’s security.

Atta Akyea has predicted that charges against the three foreigners – who are in the country at the behest of the NPP to train the party’s security detail – would fail in court.

Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (Rtd.) 54, WO/ Denver Dwayhe Naidu (Rtd.), 39, and Captain Mlungiseleli Jokani (Rtd.), 45 have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful training and false declaration.

“The charges are very watery, military training is when soldiers are training. So this is a civilian training; civilians who are trying to learn how to protect VIPs. I do not see how you will be able to succeed with such a charge”, said the Abuakwa South MP.

He spoke on the Super Morning Show on Thursday.

The Abuakwa South MP adds the three South African nationals declared their intention with Ghana’s mission in South Africa before coming to Ghana, noting the charge of false declaration is also likely to be thrown out by the court.

The Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) picked up the three former police officers in the Central Region for allegedly engaging in acts that threaten the country’s security.

“The trio, all ex-police officers were engaged in training fifteen young men in various military drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response maneuvers,” according to the BNI.

The Bureau said the training of some 15 persons at Agona Duakwa in Central Region town raises security issues “given the heightened security awareness in the country following some terrorist attacks in the sub-region.”

The NPP has since Monday when the story broke been at pains justifying why the party engaged the services of the trio.
