Challenges at TOR cause of premix fuel shortage – Fisheries Minister

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister says challenges being faced by the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) are to blame for the nationwide shortage of premix fuel.

Elizabeth Afoley Quaye said the Ministry has placed the order for supply of the fuel but it has not arrived because of pump issues at TOR.

She told Joy News’ Favour Nunoo Tuesday that the Ministry is working to have the supply restored.

Fishing communities in the Western, Central and Greater Accra have been hit by the shortage of premix fuel.

Some angry fishermen in the Central Region registered their disappointment with the development. They said their work has been affected by the shortage, threatening to demonstrate at the Flagstaff House if they are not supplied the fuel.

Premix fuel helps to power their fishing boats on the sea but many of them said they have abandoned their boats since the start of the shortage.

Reacting to the issue, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye said the Ministry is working with TOR to have it resolved.

She said the shortage has come about because of the high demand for the fuel which has been necessitated by the fishing season.

The Minister said the National Premix Fuel Committee has visited some affected communities to interact with them.

“We believe that by weekend supply will have been improved,” she said.
