Brong Ahafo National Road Safety Commission Celebrates Road Safety Awareness Week

Brong Ahafo Road Safety Commission celebrates Road Safety Awareness Week in the regional capital Sunyani.

The aim of this year’s road safety week is to empower pedestrians and passengers on what to do to help minimize their vulnerability to road traffic crashes during the festive seasons whereby road traffic crashes are on the increase.

The 2014 Road Safety Week is under the theme: “Empowering passengers and pedestrians to demand road safety.”

Statistics indicate that, an average of six deaths is recorded a day and 2000 yearly as a result of road traffic crashes leaving several thousand injured and permanently incapacitated in Ghana.

Mr. Mensah Abrampah Agyabeng, Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), speaking at a Public Transport Day Ceremony said, pedestrians and passengers represent the most vulnerable road users in the country and they account for almost 67% of road traffic death.

He urged pedestrians and passengers to speak up and safe their lives.

Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, ACP Patrick Adusei advised Drivers to follow road safety rules and regulations, and also read and communicate to road signs.

Drunk driving, Over-speeding, tiredness, weather conditions and careless driving, according ACP Patrick Adusei, are the major cause of road traffic crashes.

The week-long event consists of: Remembrance Day, Media Sensitization, Road Safety Debate/Quiz, National Public Transport Day, Children’s Day, visit to Mosque, Road Safety Walk, visit to hospitals and Thanksgiving Service.
