Blue Skies Foundation Launches School Farm Project

Blue Sky Foundation has launched its initiative, the ‘School Farm Project’ in the Eastern Regional town of Fotobi near Nsawam in the Eastern region. The event which saw Deputy Ministry of Agric in charge of Livestock, Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw sat in as special guest of honour, is an initiative designed by Blue Skies Foundation to re-energize the image of agriculture among the youth in both the rural and urban areas.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Alexta Gyinatey who is the Public Relations Officer, (PRO) of Blue Skies Foundation in an interview with Rite news explained that they were motivated to do the launching as a result of the motivation received from the success of the pilot program undertaken in 2015. According to him, the foundation has through the pilot program realized the need to go a step further by involving more schools to come on board.

He pointed out that this was not the only event that as his foundation will hold a similar project later on in the year where they will select 60 schools out of which the best 40 would be picked to compete in the actual competition.

Mr. Gyinatey added that they were at the moment concentrating their efforts in four regions namely Volta, Eastern, Central and Greater Accra Regions and that at the end of it all, the best school to come out of the lot would be awarded.

He was grateful and appreciated the contributions of the media and teachers as well as the various directors in the educational sector which is making an impact and enlightening Ghanaians on the fact that agriculture is the way forward and therefore was the need to appreciate its contributions.

On her part, Dr. Hannah Bissiw who said she was elated to participate in the launch of the ‘School Farm Of The Year Competition’ lauded the initiative. She acknowledged that the farmers’ project is in line with programs of the government of Ghana such as The National Farmers Day Celebration, Youth in Agriculture, Agriculture Mechanization Centres and Youth Enterprise Support, all of which are diverse ways designed to encourage the youth empowerment.

The deputy minister, while reminding that majority of last year’s award winners of the National Farmers’ Day were youth, said Agriculture contributed 20.3% of GDP to the national economy.
