Blame Aquatic Weeds On Selfish Interests

By Austin Ofori Addo:

The call to deal with the issue of aquatic weeds on the Volta Lake by some fisher folks has taken an interesting dimension. This time, Lower Manya Krobo Parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party thinks sabotage and people’s selfish interests is blamable for the development.

Mr. Foster Emmanuel Okley has categorically blamed certain individuals for being behind the sprawling up of the aquatic weeds on the lake for their selfish interest.

The parliamentary candidate who was speaking on Rite FM’s political show, Platform lamented to host, Krobea Asante that veteran fisherfolks who first began fishing on the Kpong Lake can pay glowing testimonies to the fact that the problems of aquatic weeds did not exist and that the present weeds were not on the lake.

Mr. Okley therefore opined that the weeds did not grow by itself, stressing that the weeds could therefore only be the handiwork of selfish individuals who harvested it for their own uses. Citing an example to buttress his point, he noted that some banana farms within the locality for instance relied on the aquatic weeds for their farming activities. In this instance, he noted that after the weeds are cleared, it is then sold to these farms where it is spread under their banana farms to protect their farms during dry season.

The CPP candidate noted that these and other interested bodies who relied on the weeds encouraged the growing of the weeds in order to serve their own interests.
