Benin’s agricultural production grows by 39 percent in 2014

Benin’s agricultural production increased from 8.2 million tons to 11 million tons during the 2014- 2015 season, a 39 percent increase, the country’s Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Minister Issa Azizou has said.

“The increase in agricultural production during this season was mainly due to the incentive measures taken by the government for the benefit of farmers,” the minister explained when he spoke on Tuesday in Cotonou.
The minister said there was an increase in all agricultural products.
“During the 2014-2015 season, Benin harvested 393,414 tons of cotton against 307,355 tons during the 2013-2014 season, a 28 percent increase,” Azizou said, adding that “this was the best harvest in the last ten years.”
At the same time, he explained, fisheries production grew from 43,000 tons in 2013-2014 season to 49,000 tons in 2014-2015 season, a 13 percent growth. Enditem
