Banks urged to allocate 5% funds to support agriculture

The minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) Ms Sherry Ayitey has called on the bank of Ghana to come out with policies that will guide the banks to allocate 5% of their profit to support the agriculture sector.

Ms Ayitey has noted that, most of the youth are eager to go into farming especially the tilapia farming but there is no funds to ever construct the cages to rare the fishes.

Speaking at the first National Agric summit at the La Palm Royal beach hotel in Accra yesterday she said that farmers cannot access loan from the banks because the conditions attached to it are not flexible noting that those that can support or grant the loan also demand high interest rate.

According to her, there are lot of university graduates that want to go into fish farming but walking into bank to seek for loan has now become frantic because the banks will always demand collaterals.

She has urged the private sector to invest in the agriculture sector since it is the backbone of our economy but not only invest in export and import activities.
