Bacteria Black Spot Affecting Mangoes

Dr. James F.T.  Awaitey, a mango farmer has said that, aside the fruit flies which is something trending now, Bacteria Black spot disease has started affecting mangoes.

According to Dr. James F. T Awaitey, it has come to their notice that, bacteria black spot is an air borne disease which affects mangoes and it was spotted somewhere last year in Brong Ahafo Region. He added that when this bacteria black spot affects your mango farms, the fruit cracks and a spot appears on it and the fruit eventually drops.

Dr. James made these comments in an interview on the “Morning Ride” Show.

“the mangoes are dropping gradually so farmers should come together and combat it because, you may think it is not in your farm today but tomorrow, you will find them.” he revealed.

He noted that, they have about two (2) to three (3) weeks to harvest meanwhile, the fruits are dropping massively because of the bacteria black spot which has affected them. Confirming the existence of the disease, a senior agronomist and global gap trainer, Mr. Victor Irval also revealed that, the bacteria black spot is indeed an air born disease which affects mangoes but was not in Ghana but for the past three (3) to four (4) years it has become prevalent. He also confirmed that the disease was first recorded in the Brong-Ahafo region and also comes out during the wet season.

Mr. Victor Irval emphasized that when a mango tree is infected, one should get fungicide spray and spray from the trunk to the leaves up because it has no cure, but needs to be control in order not to spread.

The infected branches, fruits and trunk should be cut down and burnt.
