Award Winners Should Take Over Farmers’ Day

By Austin Ofori:

The National Farmers Day Celebration held on Friday the 4th of December 2015 this year raised a lot of eyebrows in the country especially in the Ashanti Region where the regional best farmer was denied his award after passing a comment to the effect that the awards given the winners could have been better.

Meanwhile, Nana Opambuor has suggested that the Farmers Day celebrations should either be a thing of the past or the past award winners be allowed to take over the over the celebration together with corporate institutions. Per this, the corporate institutions would give out what they deem appropriate and nobody can coerce them to tow their own choice of awards.

Meanwhile, the president for the Concerned Farmers Association, Nana Opambuor Bonsu Boateng in his reaction to issues bordering the appropriate awards to be given, added that farmers deserved irrigation dams to boost crop production especially in this period of adverse climatic changes.  He said the organizers of the program lacked the necessary knowledge to organize the event, leaving them confused, adding that the organizers got everything about the celebrations wrong.

However, in an interview with Mr. Francis Nii Klotey, Director of Crops Development of Agriculture in the Yilo Krobo Municipal, he noted that it was good to have what the farmers are demanding for but we should consider the cost involved.

He however added that the award is just to encourage the farmers because what they earn from their work goes into their individual pockets anyway. He further pointed out that the awards given the farmers came from donors.
