Assisting Needy Students Our Priority – Ampem Nyarko

District Chief Executive of the Asuogyaman district in the Eastern region, honourable Thomas Ampem Nyarko has stressed that more priority was to be given to needy students so far as the distribution of the District Assemblies Common Fund was concerned. This he explained, the assembly would do through the paying of school fees of affected students from the fund in a bid to guarantee a secured future for them.

The District Chief Executive made the point on Friday when he led the exercise for the distribution of the disability fund of The District Assemblies Common Fund. The exercise which was held at the Assembly hall of the Asuogyaman district assembly saw over ninety beneficiaries receiving various sums of monies as the assembly’s assistance towards supporting the physically-challenged in the district.

Addressing beneficiaries, honourable Ampem Nyarko who is also the aspiring Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman constituency on the ticket of the NDC noted that the distribution among others was aimed at redirecting the physically-challenged who mostly resorted to soliciting for alms on the streets away and towards a meaningful life while urging them to engage in productive ventures to support themselves.

In a bid to encourage more people living with disabilities to venture into productive ventures, the DCE called on beneficiaries who were interested and ready to engage in their own chosen businesses to come forward with their business plans.

According to him, the assembly would present key people within its ranks to engage and think through those business proposals and make the necessary inputs pertaining to the viability of their proposals as well as the necessary assistance and financial input the assembly would inject into it.

The DCE who also reminded beneficiaries that disability was not inability, said the assembly had already acquired various equipment such as sewing machines, hair dryers, etc to assist people living with disabilities in the district who were desirous of engaging in various businesses.

Mr. Ampem Nyarko urged beneficiaries to recognize the efforts of the government in improving the livelihood of the physically-challenged, adding that the government was determined to increase the disabled’s share of the common fund.

He called on beneficiaries to dispel rumours that monies meant for the disabled were always misappropriated. He expressed worry that many who received their share of the fund failed to use it for the reasons for which they applied. He therefore called on them to consider investing the amount, no matter how meager into their petty businesses adding that those who show proof of putting their share into viable businesses would be given further assistance.
