Three National Democratic Congress Parliamentary Aspirants (NDC), Georgina Opoku popularly known as ‘Asor’ from the Kwahu Abetifi Constituency, Margaret Ansei also known as Magoo from the Suhum constituency and Shirley Naana Osei Ampem from the Asamankese constituency yesterday put smiles on the faces of some 53 children at a rescue home in Tema.

Consumables including assorted drinks, bags of rice, sugar, gallons of cooking oil, biscuits, and toiletries, bathing soaps, washing and eating plates were given out as present for inmates of the house to help them celebrate the years Christmas uniquely.

The 53 children whose ages ranged between 7 and 17 years were rescued from South Africa, La Cote D’ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo, Nigeria, the United States of America and Benin by the Anti-human trafficking Unit with a joint force by the Ghana Police Service.  In a break down, there were 11 females with little Angel who is only 7.

According to Mrs. Patience Quaye, the Greater Accra regional Anti human trafficking manager, some of the children were sold by their own parents to foreign nationals for only $50, others were rented to slave masters, whilst some were kidnapped and others transited to play football overseas. “Each of the children have their own story with some rented to play football, others sold for a basket of fish” she disclosed.

In a development, Mrs. Quaye noted that many other cases of human trafficking are yet not known, however some indigents of the country still ponder over sleeping places across the world, though a lot of promising avenues still awaits them in a homeland like Ghana.

Mrs. Asor who was in La Cote D’ivoire last week was sad to note that slavery, though abolished in the country still existed in the country when parents can help their children attain higher academic laurels in order to be catered for at old age. She has therefore advised parents to realize children are gift from God and everything possible must be done to ensure that, their interest is served.

In an address by MAGOO, aspirant for Suhum constituency, she was happy by efforts of the anti- trafficking unit and the police intelligence, which led to the timely rescue of children who were rented; sold, and kidnapped to be in hard labour in foreign countries.

She also congratulated staff of the home for their immense services towards rehabilitating these children, who out of ignorance were taken into captivity which violated their fundamental rights to live without any obstruction.

Father Frederick Okusu, overseer of the 16 staff facility, who received the items was splendidly overwhelmed by the kind gesture, and thanked the donors for a deed worthily acknowledged in heaven. He has therefore pleaded with individuals, groups and charitable organizations to come to their aid since much help is needed externally to facilitate proper care of inmates.
