Apply Agro Chemicals Wisely – Farmers Urged

By Mary Dompreh:

Mr. Charles Nyaaba, Programmes Manager Of the Peasant Framers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has said that one of the big concerns they have as an association is the way farmers apply agro chemicals especially pesticides, weedicides and other chemicals on farming lands.

Mr. Nyaaba who was concerned about the health of the farmers said wrong handling of the chemicals has had adverse effects on their health status. This is because users did not use protective clothing in applying the chemical.

The way forward therefore, he recommended was that farmers adopt sustainable farming practices that will ensure that we are able to control the weeds and pests.

He also charged the use of organic manure which does not contain chemicals. Organic manure, he argues is effective and has the capacity to sustain the soil, noting that it comes very cheap. ‘I am therefore encouraging the farmers to use the organic manure since it will help sustain the soil and also help them get the high yield they are looking for,’ Mr. Nyaaba added.

This he maintains is a guarantee for abundant food production in the country.
