Annual Brigade Festival Held In Somanya

An annual brigade festival has been held in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo constituency of the eastern region. The festival seeks to train and equip children and the youth to develop skills and talents that will shape their lives and prepare them fully to face the future.

Out of seven districts that were to participate in the brigade festival, only five turned out including Tema Central, Tema West, Manhyia, Ashaiman and Krobo districts, Madam Evelyn Appiah Sarah, Regional Coordinator for Tema and the Volta region council disclosed to Rite news.

She also said that, children are able to develop leadership skills through the three sections of the brigade process which cuts across physical, social and educational lines. The brigade organizes regular clean up exercises in various communities to sensitize children and the youth on the need to maintain sanity in our environment. With the educational aspect, children stage drama through which lessons are learnt and disseminated.

Recalling the history of brigade in Ghana, Madam Appiah said that it was instituted about 103 years ago by one soldier called Sir William Alexander Smith in London who was a Sunday school teacher in a church, with its primary focus on training children to become good leaders.

Special guest for the event, former Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo municipality, Honorable Michael Teye Nyaunu in an address said he was happy about the training given to the children and youth since it will help equip the nation’s future leaders.
