The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and

Fishermen (GNAFF) Rev. Kwadwo Nkrumah has passionately called on

government to allocate 5% of cocoa money to construct irrigation dams to increase

food production in the country. Ghana is currently having 4% of irrigation facilities

which according to him, it is not enough to help farmers work all year round in the

country.

He noted that, we cannot increase agriculture productivity without irrigation

facility because most of the farmers in some part of the country faces problems of

climate change. He added that, as we want to do all year round farming, there is the

need to construct more irrigation dams to subsequently reduce over dependent on

rain-fed agriculture

Dr. Nkrumah in an interview with Rite FM lamented that, Burkina Faso is a

country with most of its land being desert lands but still produce more tomatoes for

traders from Ghana and other countries to purchase it in higher quantities because

they have more irrigation facilities.

He therefore appealed to the Ghana Irrigation Authority and the Ministry of Food

and Agriculture to as a matter of concern construct more irrigation dams in the

country to enable famers work all year round.
