Akorley Pack House Is A Misplaced Priority

By: Richard Dankwa:

Mr. Enoch Teye, first runner up of the 2012 national best farmer awards has opined that the construction of the Akorley Pack House located in the Yilo Krobo municipality in the eastern region was a wrong move. He has therefore taken a swipe at the brains and authorities behind the project, insisting that the construction of the facility was not in the best interest of the mango farmers.

The former second best farmer who was interacting with Rite news was not impressed with the Pack House stating that it was in the wrong direction to build a Pack House for the mango farmers. According to him, those behind the facility should have rather constructed a processing factory for them, adding that that would have been more useful to them.

The Millennium Development Authority, (MIDA), constructed a Pack House in Akorley, farming community in Somanya in the eastern region in 2012 to support the youth and the expansion of the horticulture sector in order to curb post-harvest loses

Mr. Teye insisted that the mango farmers would have preferred to have access to a processing factory because most of their mangoes can be processed and used as fruit and jam of which could have provided and served as a source of employment to several people around those communities and beyond.

He insisted that the construction of the Pack House has been a waste since some farmers cannot afford its services, adding that one should not be surprised that farmers are not patronizing it. This he insists underscores his position that farmers cannot afford the services of the Pack House.
