Akateng Boat Owners Call For Removal Of Trees Stumps In The Volta Lake

The chairman for the Afram Plains Canoe Owners Association, Togbe Abufiano has made a passionate appeal to the government and the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture to come to their aid by removing tree stamps from the Volta Lake to prevent the recurrence of ferry accidents occurring on the Volta Lake.

Tobge Abufiano who made this call in an interview with Rite FM news said this was long overdue.

He recalled that not too long ago, there as an accident on the river which resulted in the death of six people after a canoe which crashed into a tree stump at Yeji capsized.

He was worried that fisherfolks in the enclave cannot sail their boats through the surface of the water from the Afram Plains to Akator in the Upper Manya Krobo districty due to the tree stumps in the water.

He added that the situation has now become a challenge and a threat to their lives, because there was the risk of an accident anytime they went fishing.

He disclosed that they have had a meeting with appropriate authorities concerning these tree stumps and the need to engage experts who can remove them.

He named the MP for Upper Manya Krobo, honourable Jeff Kavianu and the District Chief Executive of Fanteakwa as some officials they have engaged on the need to resolve the issue.
