Agric Still Remains Backbone Of Ghana’s Economy-Davies Korboe

By: Joyce Bedeley

The chairman for the National Farmers and Fishermen Award Winners Association of Ghana, NFFAWAG Davies Narh Korboe has iterated the age old cliché that Agriculture still remains the backbone of the Ghanaian economy and which status should be maintained as such.

Mr. Korboe made the assertion at the launch of the 8th FAGRO National Food and Agric Show at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Tuesday under the theme: creating Jobs in Agriculture – Northern Region in Focus to be held in September.

He expressed NFFAWAG’s delight at the collaboration with the FAGRO secretariat in launching the 2017 edition of the National Food and Agric Show and commended FAGRO and its associates for ‘leading the crusade on Government’s agenda on changing the perception of the youth that Agric is a sector for the poor since the sector and its value chains provides vast employment opportunities for the chuck of the Ghanaian labour force.

‘FAGRO and its associates are leading the crusade on Government’s agenda on changing the perception of the youth that agric is a sector for the poor because the sector employs about 70% of the labour force,’ Mr. Korboe said.

Mr. Korboe also observed that the theme’s focus on the Northern region is in line with the three Northern regions’ unenviable status as poor and deprived parts of the country even when the chunk of the country’s agric produce is from those sectors of the country.

The chairman lauded President Akuffo Addo for his ‘planting for food and jobs’ initiative, adding that the theme for the Agric Show falls in line with the president’s focus. He was also confident that the policy will create jobs and ensure food security in the country and gave the assurance that NFFAWAG and FAGRO will support the president to achieve this goal.
