Agric Forum: Mode of Accessing Fertilizer Subsidy Too Complicated

By Prince Paul Amuzu

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Hope for the Future Farmers Association, Mr. Tetteh Michael has pleaded with the government to resort to the initial format or method used in sharing fertilizer by filling of coupons to enhance accessibility and production.

Speaking on Saturday’s Agric Forum with Krobea Asante, the PRO noted that the mode of application and accessibility of subsidized fertilizer is now very complex and difficult for ordinary farmer to access.

According to him, farmers formerly just filled forms or coupons to access the subsidized fertilizer but now a lot of procedures need to be followed before having access.

Some of these he noted included the demand that an applicant ought to be an MTN subscriber to pave the way for the exchange of text messages between the farmer and the authorities concerned.

Decrying this process, Mr. Tetteh argued that this could be tricky for a lot of farmers who are not educated coupled with the fact that the majority of them too are not using mobile phones.

Mr. Tetteh who lamented that the cost of fertilizer is higher than seed and other farming inputs has therefore pleaded with the government to resort to the initial method of applying for and accessing fertilizer subsidies which involved only the filling of coupons in order to improve accessibility and production.

He particularly appealed to the Agricultural Development Bank and other financial institutions to assist farmers in areas of irrigation and also towards the creation of credit facility avenues which can be easily accessed and affordable to the ordinary farmer in order to improve the values of the agric Sector.
