Afriyie Ankrah: I never engaged in embezzlement

Minister of State at the Presidency Elvis Afriyie Ankrah claims he stands by his admission that he “never and did not engage in any act of embezzlement or misappropriation of public funds in and outside the Brazil World Cup saga.”

He indicated that just as he explained at the Commission of Inquiry’s public sitting, he has rendered full account of his stewardship to relevant authorities.

Mr Afriyie Ankrah was reacting to the release of government’s White Paper on the Commission of Inquiry’s report.

Among other accepted recommendations, the former Minister of Youth and Sports is to be surcharged with any misapplied or misappropriated funds provided by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

“In the coming days, I expect to get a copy of the full report of the Justice Dzamefe-led Commission of Inquiry which was submitted to the Government in March,” he noted in a statement issued on Sunday, June 14.

“My legal team and I shall study it thoroughly and carefully together with the White Paper, after which I will make a full statement, where need be, on the Commission’s recommendations and the White Paper.”

He expressed readiness to cooperate with “the relevant authorities on any other consequential matters arising from the report and the White Paper, just as I did with the Commission of Inquiry.”

Ghana’s participation in the 2014 World Cup was bedevilled with player wrangling, which many attribute as the cause of the Black Stars’ failure to go past the group stage
