AFDB to Train Youth in Agric

The Agricultural Engineer at the African Development Bank AfDB , Mr. Tabi Kakakari has told Rite news that his bank is initiating a project named “Enable Youth”  which is aimed at luring and empowering the youth into agriculture.

He said the main aim of the project is to get the youth interested in agriculture and to do it in a way that will generate income for them, adding that the bank will adequately train the youth and equip them with the necessary skills to go into farming and fetch them a meaningful income out of agriculture.

According to Mr. Karikari, the concept is one developed by the Agricultural Development Bank and very well thought through. He said the youth involved will be carefully selected youth, very much interested in agric and who will not come overnight and say ‘I want another interest.’

He said they will take them through comprehensive training, well developed curriculum as well as hands on training so that by the time they come out they know exactly what to do and how to do it. In addition, they will also equip them with the skills to go to the business community, seek for the business opportunities that they need, look for the market that they want and everything to make their businesses grow.

He said ‘Enable Youth’ is a new concept being implemented in about twenty African countries and still growing with a lot of momentum. With Ghana he said, the program was still at the implementation stages and yet to be fully rolled out. He said choosing beneficiaries was going to be a matter of priority so that only serious minded youth with the desire to exploit opportunities in the agricultural sector are rolled in since bringing the wrong people will lead to an abuse of the whole purpose.
