AFCON 2015: Ayew plays down title talk to focus on Senegal clash

Andre Ayew has played down Ghana’s chances of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that their focus is on their opening game against Senegal on Monday.

With four titles to their credit and the last dating back to 1982, every campaign opens with high expectations.

The Black Stars continue inch closer to the ultimate, having reached the semi-finals in each of the last four tournaments.

“We have lots of young players and I wouldn’t say we are here to win the trophy. We’ll go one game at a time,” Ayew told media in Mongomo on Sunday.

“In 2010 we got to the final not long after winning the under-20 World Cup (in 2009), we went into the tournament full of confidence.”

With a new man at the helm, Ayew expects Avram Grant to pull Ghana through a tough in Group C, in which they will also come up against Algeria and South Africa.

“Today we have a great coach who has worked at big clubs and has lots of experience, so I am happy because he can bring us a lot.”
