The Director for Women in Agricultural Development, WIAD in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Department of Agric, Madam Hilda Huadzi has advised livestock farmers to adhere to proper sanitary conditions in order to add additional value to their products.
Speaking on Rite FM’s morning show Wednesday with the regular host, Krobea Asante, Hilda Huadzi noted that livestock farmers need to take very good care of their livestock in terms of sanitation, feeding, what they drink and also where they are kept.
Madam Hilda also decried the insanitary conditions under which abattoirs or ‘butcher houses’ operated and therefore cautioned them to adhere strictly to the sanitation rules and regulations to ensure clean and proper care of the various livestock that are brought to them for slaughtering. This according to her is to avoid any contamination which could be harmful to human health. She also encouraged veterinary officers to educate farmers in the course of their duties.
According to her, the appearance of such animals as goats, pigs, sheep, and cattle determines their price and therefore advised farmers on the need to take proper care of their livestock to add value to them in terms price.
Madam Huadji who noted that livestock farming is a booming business, urged the youth to go into it as it does not require huge sums of capital to start with. According to the director of WIAD, agriculture is the bedrock of the economy and should not be undermined.
As an extension officer herself, she noted that it is part of their responsibilities to educate farmers on the best farming practices, adding that it is therefore imperative that farmers take their education on farming practices seriously as they visit them on their various farms. She therefore called on farmers not to ignore them so that they can add value to their products.
