Accra Mayor Threatens To Terminate Contract With Waste Mgt. Companies

The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuijie has threatened to terminate the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) contract with four waste management companies he believes are delivering below expectation.

Though the Mayor refused to mention the four companies involved, he said reports indicate that they have refused to collect waste in households under their jurisdiction.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Oko Vandepuijie said the AMA will not hesitate to terminate the services of the four companies if they fail to improve their services by April , 2015.

“We have already met with four companies of the waste management that we know are not performing well in some of our areas. We have given them up till April to improve their performance and if they don’t improve their performance by the end of April, we will terminate their contract and we will bring in new companies to do a much better work so we have no excuse to burn our refuse within our communities,” he stated.

Ghana’s capital, Accra has been engulfed in filth for months now, prompting residents in Accra to call on the Mayor of Accra to address the problem.

There have also been a couple of protests to compel the city authority to keep the environment clean.

In June, 2014, some Ghanaians calling themselves ‘Clean Ghana Now’marched in protest of the filth in Accra.

The group also petitioned the AMA to do all it can to clean the city.
