Accam opens MLS goal account

Fit-again David Accam finally opened his MLS account in his third game for Chicago Fire over the weekend.

Accam who joined in the January window from Swedish side Helsingborgs IF’s start to life in the American League was slowed down by an injury upon his return from the African Nations Cup coupled with a national team call in March.

And it was in his third game for the Fire against New York City FC (NYCFC) that the Ghanaian international showed glimpses of his usual self as he tormented the visitors all game.

Accam broke the deadlock after chasing NYCFC goalkeeper Ryan Meara who hesitated in clearing his lines in an attempt to prevent conceding a corner kick. The goal ended up being the difference between the two sides.

“I think I am 100 percent now, but I know I can give more to the team. I just need to keep working hard and I know there’s more to still come from me,” the 24-year-old said after the game.

Accam puts his goal down to focus and hard work.

“When you work really hard things come for you, and that’s what we did today, work hard, and I’m not surprised I got the goal,” he told reporters.

“I took a gamble on the ball, and when the ’keeper was going for the ball I just went straight to him and we got the goal. It’s not simple. When you work hard everything comes to you, so it’s not simple.”

Accam’s match winner stretched Chicago Fire’s winning run to three and moved to fourth in the Eastern Conference on nine points.
