34 One District One Factory Allocation to Eastern Region, Lower Manya to Establish Mango Processing, Others.

Following Government’s decision to establish factories across the 216 districts in the country (one district one factory), Hon. Ken Ofori Atta, Ghana’s Minister for Finance in the presentation of the 2018 budget statement on Wednesday, 15 November, 2017,  stated 191 are ready for implementation for the 2018 fiscal year.

When the news broke out, residents of Lower Manya Krobo Municipal especially the teeming unemployed youth were in a state of doubt as to whether their Municipal is part of the 34 allocations to the Eastern Region.

Meanwhile, the MCE for the Municipality, Hon. Simon Kweku Tetteh has confirmed to Rite FM’s Community Watch last Saturday, his Municipal is benefiting for which they are going to establish Mango, honey and cassava processing factory.

He revealed among other things that, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has authorized the Municipal to set up District Implementation Team (DIT) which will work closely with the Ministry for the implementation of the initiative.

According to the MCE, the DIT will be made up of institutional representations within the district (municipal) which will provide the needed support in respect of the establishment and operation of the District Enterprise.

“It is proposed that the DIT is made up of the MCE, the Member of Parliament (MP), Chief(s) of the project location, Municipal Coordinating Director, District Planning Officer and the Regional Trade Representative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry,” the Municipal Chief Executive said.

While the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament co-chair the team, other members will play other supporting roles to make the initiative successful.

A reliable information available to Rite FM says a total of 462 proposals were submitted by individual and private entities to facilitate the roll out of the One District One Factory project. 191 factories will be implemented in 102 Districts across the 10 regions in the country.

The projects selected for implementation involves 104 companies operating in the Agribusiness sector and 20 business in the meat and poultry sector. Where 40 of the companies operate in construction and building materials, the remaining 27 are businesses operating in the cosmetics and pharmaceuticals sectors.

The implementation in 2018 fiscal year gives the Ashanti Region highest allocations followed by the Eastern Region. The Upper East and the Upper West Regions have the least allocations.

The Regional breakdown are as follows;

Ashanti Region 35, Eastern Region 34, Greater Accra Region 28, Central Region 21, Brong Ahafo 19, Volta Region 18, Northern Region 17, Western Region 10, Upper West Region 5 and the Upper East Region 4.

Government has assured to allocate a minimum of Ghc 2 million to each district assembly for the implementation of the 1-District-1- Factory.
