3 arrested for stealing 206 bags of cocoa beans

A night security guard at Akansanoma Cocoa Shed and his two accomplices are in the grips of the Tema Region Police for failing to give details of the destination of 206 bags of cocoa beans found in their possession around CPC Tenia on Sunday dawn.

The security guard, Fredrick Baako, 30, and the other two accomplices – Moses Amoah, 35, and John Essiaw, 47 – would have made GHȻ72,100 if they had succeeded in transporting the 206 bags of cocoa beans to an unknown destination, re-bagged it and sold it at the black market.

Briefing the press about the arrest, the Tema Region Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng, said when the patrol team intercepted the KIA truck, with registration number GC 7088-11, the waybill carried by the three suspects stated the place of dispatch as Oda and destination as Takoradi Port. The date of dispatch was, however, not stated.

These discrepancies made the patrol team suspicious, leading to the arrest of the men.

ASP Obeng hinted that the men would be arraigned before court while investigations still go on.

She urged the public to be vigilant and help weed out all criminals in the industrial city to make businesses safe.

The Public Affairs Manager of Ghana Cocobod, Mr Noah Ameyah, confirmed the arrest and stated that the 206 bags belong to Ghana Cocoa Board but the exact shed they were stolen from was yet to be identified.

He seized the opportunity to warn other employees of COCOBOD to desist from such nefarious activities since management was not going to take such acts lightly.
