2 Police officers nabbed for diverting 390 bags of fertilizer

Two police officers have been arrested for diverting 390 bags of stolen fertilizers valued at 50,000 cedis meant for cocoa farmers at Sankore in the Asunafo South District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

Constables Kyei Amoah and Osei Tutu, 27 years and 31 years respectively are currently at the visibility unit of the Ghana Police Service at Suame in Kumasi.

Briefing the media at the Police Regional Headquarters in Sunyani, the Regional Commander DCOP Maxwell Atingane said upon tip off, the police intercepted a Leyland truck at 10:00pm, Monday at Acherensua police check point loaded with 390 bags of the fertilizers meant for cocoa farmers at Sankore in the Asunafo District of the Brong Ahafo region.

These items were being escorted by the two constables and the owner of the items, Job Asamoah, who is at large.

The 27 year old truck driver Yaw Banahene is also in the grips of the police.

DCOP Maxwell Atingane said the officers have been charged for abetment of crime and the owner of the fertilizers will be fished out from his hide out

Speaking to Joy News, Thomas Tweneboa-Kodua, Regional manager of cocoa health and extension division of cocoa board said some of the farmers are involved in the scam as some of them sell the fertilizers given to them free by the government instead of using it on their farms.

He said two farmers, Yaw Awuah and Osei Bonsu both at Ajumakase sold their fertilizers to Job Asamoah, owner of Job and Sons Agro chemicals at Sankore, while Kofi Brobbey and Kwaku Dede at Kwapong bought from some other farmers and sold to other Agro chemical sellers.
