100, 000 Farmers Received Training In Cocoa Sustainability – AGROECOM

A total of over hundred thousand farmers have been trained in cocoa sustainability programs across cocoa producing areas in the country, Ghana.

The training embarked by Agroecom Ghana Limited (Armajaro) aims at equipping cocoa farmers with requisite knowledge on how to sustain cocoa as means of sustaining it and increase production to increase the country economic revenue.

At a durbar for the announcement of farmer premium held in two respective areas Edubiase in the Ashanti and Asankoraqua in the west region, the deputy country head-Ghana of Agroecom, Mr. Nicholas Kumah indicated that, “AGL in partnership with Ghana Cocoa Board and chocolate manufacturers through Source Trust are embarking on a composite program meant to address the challenges of our farmers.

It was the theme; “Cocoa Sustainability- a key to Improving Farmers Productivity”.

This according to him will help improve yield through the provision of Training on GAP, GEP, GSP, GBP and organized them into formidable groups, Mapping the farms, improve planting materials, Agrochemicals and setting up demonstration farms.

He said, AGL over the past years with its partners has invested more than Five million US dollars in various farms improvement and rural livelihood projects across five cocoa producing regions of Ghana.

Mr. Kumah mentioned self-contained IT village resource centers with computers and internet connectivity to aid students, farmers, and the wider community to develop IT skills and learning.

Others are, improving farmer’s access to new and improved planting materials, improving farmers access to fertilizer and agrochemicals through innovative credit scheme of sustainability Management services (SMS), a division of ecom. More than 50,000 long lasting insecticide treated nets, 150 boreholes and construction and rehabilitation of schools.

Mr. Richard noted that “farms are destroying because of harmful insecticides applying on crops”. This he indicated as means to support government by providing quality farm inputs to farmers which will help increase production in yielding better revenue returns.

However, Mr. Dennis Dorsah Sampong LBC head of the company at Asankoraqua announced the payment of farmer premium of ten million Ghana cedis to their gallant farmers who supplied AGL with sustainable cocoa for the 2015/16 season.
